Diagnostic & Therapeutic Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

See More. Detect Earlier. Treat Sooner.

Our endoscopy centres combine painless sedation, high-definition imaging, and experienced gastroenterologists to provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy services — from routine screening to advanced polyp and lesion removal.

Why Gastrointestinal Endoscopy?

Endoscopy is the gold standard for diagnosing and treating conditions of the digestive tract. It allows direct visualisation, biopsy, and even treatment — all in a single session.

Painless Sedation

All endoscopy procedures are performed under monitored sedation by experienced anaesthesiologists. You sleep comfortably and wake with no memory of the procedure.

High-Definition Imaging

State-of-the-art endoscopes with HD and narrow-band imaging (NBI) technology for superior visualisation of mucosal details and early lesion detection.

Same-Day Results

Preliminary findings are communicated immediately after the procedure. A detailed report with images is provided the same day.

Expert Gastroenterologists

Our endoscopists are experienced specialists from top-tier hospitals, with extensive training in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.

See a patient's journey through consultation, preparation, painless endoscopy, recovery, and follow-up.

When Should You Consider Gastrointestinal Endoscopy?

Consult your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms or fall into a higher-risk category.

Persistent stomach pain, heartburn, or acid reflux
Difficulty swallowing or unexplained nausea
Rectal bleeding or blood in stool
Persistent changes in bowel habits
Unexplained weight loss or iron-deficiency anaemia
Family history of GI cancers or polyps
Age 45+ for routine colorectal cancer screening
Surveillance after previous polyp removal

Diagnostic Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

Available at both Guangzhou and Shenzhen centres under painless sedation.

Gastroscopy (Upper GI Endoscopy)

A thin, flexible tube with a camera examines the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Detects ulcers, inflammation, H. pylori infection, and early-stage cancers.

15–20 min

Colonoscopy (Lower GI Endoscopy)

Examines the entire colon and rectum to detect polyps, inflammation, and colorectal cancer. Polyps can be removed during the same procedure.

20–40 min

Combined Gastroscopy + Colonoscopy

Both upper and lower GI endoscopy performed in a single sedation session — saving time and reducing the need for multiple anaesthesia episodes.

30–50 min

Therapeutic Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

Beyond diagnosis — our endoscopists can treat conditions during the same procedure, avoiding the need for open surgery.

Polypectomy (Polyp Removal)

Removal of polyps found during endoscopy. Most polyps can be removed on the spot using snare, forceps, or electrocautery techniques.

ESD (Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection)

An advanced technique for removing larger or flat lesions from the GI tract lining in one piece, enabling complete pathological assessment and reducing recurrence.

EMR (Endoscopic Mucosal Resection)

Injection of fluid beneath the lesion to lift it, followed by snare removal. Suitable for smaller elevated lesions and sessile polyps.

ESD and EMR are advanced procedures currently available at our Guangzhou centre. For patients in Shenzhen requiring these procedures, our team can coordinate referral to Guangzhou.

Gastrointestinal Endoscopy FAQs

Everything you need to know about endoscopy procedures at Distinct Healthcare.

What is the purpose of gastroscopy and colonoscopy?

Gastroscopy examines the upper digestive tract (oesophagus, stomach, duodenum) to detect ulcers, inflammation, H. pylori infection, and early-stage cancers. Colonoscopy examines the entire colon and rectum to detect polyps, inflammation, and colorectal cancer. Both procedures allow direct visualization, biopsy, and treatment in a single session.

Is the procedure painful?

No. Both procedures are performed under painless sedation (conscious sedation or general anaesthesia). You will be comfortable throughout the procedure and may have little or no memory of it afterward.

What is the preparation before the procedure?

For gastroscopy: fasting for 6 hours before the procedure. For colonoscopy: bowel preparation is required—you will need to take a laxative the day before and fast. Our nursing staff will provide detailed preparation instructions and can assist with medication administration in your room if you stay overnight.

Are there any risks or complications?

Complications are rare (less than 0.1%). Possible risks include bleeding, perforation, and infection. Our experienced team takes all necessary precautions. If polyps are removed or biopsies taken, there may be minor bleeding, which is usually self-limiting. Serious complications are extremely rare.

What should I expect after the procedure?

You will rest in our recovery room for 30-60 minutes. You may feel mild bloating or discomfort, which usually resolves quickly. Do not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours after the procedure due to sedation. You can resume normal activities the next day.

How often should I have an endoscopy?

Screening recommendations depend on your age, symptoms, and risk factors. Generally: gastroscopy screening for those with symptoms; colonoscopy screening starting at age 45-50 for average-risk individuals, every 10 years if normal. Your doctor will advise based on your individual situation.

What if polyps are found?

If polyps are discovered, they can usually be removed during the same procedure using polypectomy (snare removal), electrocautery, or advanced techniques like ESD or EMR. Removal is important to prevent cancer development. Additional charges apply for polyp removal based on size and complexity.
